Phil Howard, co-owner and chef at Elystan Street in London, is a highly respected culinary professional. Since its opening in 2016, Elystan Street has received critical acclaim and numerous awards. Before this, Phil co-owned The Square, a renowned restaurant he helped establish in 1991, earning two Michelin stars during his tenure.
Phil began his culinary career in 1988 at Roux Restaurants, after earning a degree in Microbiology from the University of Kent. He further honed his skills under Marco Pierre White at Harvey's and Simon Hopkinson at Bibendum. Known for his modern French cuisine, Phil focuses on harmonizing flavors rather than relying on technical showmanship.
Throughout his career, Phil has garnered numerous accolades, including Chef's Chef of The Year and Restaurant of The Year. He frequently appears on TV shows like The Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen, and MasterChef. Additionally, he has authored two acclaimed cookbooks, "The Square: The Cookbook Volumes 1 and 2."
Phil is an active member of The Royal Academy of Culinary Arts and contributes to culinary competitions such as Young Chef Young Waiter and National Chef of the Year. He also co-owns several other London restaurants, including The Ledbury, Kitchen W8, Sonny's Kitchen, Perilla, Lorne, and Gezellig, as well as Union in the French Alps.
A patron of Ace Africa, Phil supports sustainable development in East African communities. South African-born, he is married to Jennie and has two children, Millie and Ali. An avid runner, Phil has completed 25 marathons to date.
