Atul Kochhar: Pioneering Michelin-Starred Indian Chef
Atul Kochhar, a trailblazing Indian chef, restaurateur, and television personality, rose to fame as one of the first Indian chefs to win a Michelin star. Born in India, Atul began his illustrious career in 1993 with the prestigious Oberoi hotel group, where he significantly raised kitchen standards as a sous chef. This early success led to a move to Hilton's restaurant under renowned chef Bernard Kunig in 1994.
Later that year, Atul moved to London to open Tamarind restaurant, where he earned his first Michelin star in 2001. Building on this success, he opened Benares in 2003, which also received a Michelin star in 2007. Atul has since opened several acclaimed restaurants, including Kanishka in London and Indian Essence in Kent.
Atul is a familiar face on television, having appeared on shows like "Great British Menu," "MasterChef," and "Saturday Kitchen." His innovative approach to Indian cuisine, blending traditional flavours with modern techniques, has garnered widespread acclaim.
In addition to his culinary achievements, Atul is an active philanthropist, supporting various charitable initiatives and advocating for sustainability in the restaurant industry. His contributions to the culinary world have made him a beloved figure both in the UK and internationally.
